CBC News - Canada - Police beat journalist covering G20: report

Freelance journalist Jesse Rosenfeld says police beat him Saturday night in Toronto as he covered a G20 demonstration.
A second journalist who witnessed the incident said it was "not a great night for democracy."
Steve Paikin, host of TVO's The Agenda public affairs show, was watching protesters on a downtown Toronto street, the Esplanade, on Saturday night.
In a message posted on Twitter, Paikin wrote that the demonstration was peaceful. "It was like an old sit-in. No one was aggressive, and yet riot squad officers moved in."
Police told him to leave, and "as I was escorted away from the demonstration, I saw two officers hold a journalist."
"The journalist identified himself as working for the Guardian," Paikin tweeted. "He talked too much and pissed the police off. Two officers held him. A third punched him in the stomach. Totally unnecessary. The man collapsed. Then the third officer drove his elbow into the man's back."
The man was Rosenfeld, 26, is a freelancer from Toronto who is now based in the Middle East. He writes for Now Magazine, The Washington Report on Middle East Affairs, The Montreal Mirror and This Magazine.
"An officer came up to me, looked at my ID, my alternative media centre press pass and said: 'This isn't a legitimate press pass. Put him under arrest!'" Rosenfeld said.
"At which point I was immediately jumped and beaten. The officer grabbed my arm, ripped it behind my back. I was punched in the stomach to make me go down to the ground. I was being hit in the ribs.
"All the time I was saying 'I am not resisting arrest. I am a journalist. Why are you beating me?'"
According to Paikin, "this guy is about 5-foot-4, 140 pounds. I later spoke to his father and found out he's only got one kidney, and he's an asthmatic. Hard to see how he was a threat to anything."
"Not a great night for democracy in our city, the way I saw it."
Toronto police said Rosenfeld is welcome to file a complaint. He has hired a lawyer.
Rosenfeld was not the only person whose arrest perturbed Paikin.
On Sunday, he said he had heard from author and academic Valerie Zawilski. She had just been released from jail after being arrested for breaching peace during the Saturday night demonstration. "Gimme a break," Paikin tweeted.
And Paikin monitored the arrest of the son of Kate Holloway. Holloway is a journalist, activist and was a Liberal party candidate in the 2007 Ontario election.
Her son Sam and Sam's girlfriend were watching a demonstration Saturday night and were arrested.
They spent a night in jail and Sam's parents had no idea where they were.

NHL UFA Update

Courtesy of: www.spectorshockey.net
The NHL's UFA period begins Thursday but so far there hasn't been much news. Here's the latest snippets on the Canadiens, Flames, Thrashers, Bruins, Canucks, Senators and Predators.

MONTREAL GAZETTE: Pat Hickey reports the Canadiens latest signings gives them a total salary cap hit of $50.6 million, giving management some "wiggle room" to re-sign goalie Carey Price, another goalie, two third and fourth line "pluggers" plus perhaps an extra defenseman. Pending UFA center Dominic Moore remains in the mix.
SPECTOR'S NOTE: Don't expect any major trades or free agent signings, Habs fans.

CALGARY HERALD: Vicki Hall reminds Flames fans that just because Ales Kotalik is on waivers doesn't necessarily mean he'll be bought out as that's something GM Darryl Sutter has never done, suggesting Kotalik could end up demoted to the minors or playing in Europe.
SPECTOR'S NOTE: That's true, but there's also a first time for everything.

ATLANTA JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION: Chris Vivlamore reports Pavel Kubina doesn't intend on accepting a "hometown discount", while Maxim Afinogenov, Colby Armstrong and Evgeny Artyukhin are headed for the UFA market. Negotiations however continue with Johan Hedberg and the two sides aren't far apart.

BOSTON HERALD: Stephen Harris reports the Philadelphia Flyers appear the best fit for Bruins goaltender Tim Thomas but that possibility remains on hold as the Flyers talk with former San Jose Sharks goalie Evgeni Nabokov.
SPECTOR'S NOTE: As per reports last night the Flyers now appear to have turned their attention to Marty Turco. Sounds like a trade of Thomas to the Flyers is a remote one.

VANCOUVER PROVINCE: Ben Kuzma suggests defenseman Kevin Bieksa could be expendable if the Canucks were to land a defenseman like Zbynyk Michalek via free agency.  GM Mike Gillis is also believed to have interest in Dan Hamhuis and might also be interested in bringing back Willie Mitchell provided he's made a full recovery from a season-ending concussion.
SPECTOR'S NOTE: There's growing speculation Hamhuis wants to sign with the Canucks but of course that'll depend upon his salary demands and if the dollars would fit comfortably on the Canucks payroll.

OTTAWA SUN: Bruce Garrioch reports Senators director of player personnel Pierre Dorion said the club cannot fit Marc Savard's $4 million per season salary under their salary cap.

THE TENNESSEAN: reports the Nashville Predators have not qualified the rights of defenseman Denis Grebeshkov and forward Dustin Boyd, which will make them unrestricted free agent this summer.

Baltimore Orioles

Closer: Alfredo Simon
Disabled list: Mike Gonzalez (shoulder)
Simon notched two saves (and a win) in the O's series against the Washington Nationals. Neither of Simon's saves was particularly shaky; he didn't yield any hits and walked only one batter in the two innings. Manager Juan Samuel also trusted him yesterday despite Simon having worked the previous two games.
Boston Red Sox RP Jonathan Papelbon
Tinkering Paps
Gonzalez reached 90-91 mph on his fastball yesterday during a two-run, one-inning rehab appearance with Class A Aberdeen. That's still a bit lower than his usual average fastball velocity, but he is hoping to return this Friday, if all goes well.
Whether Gonzo returns to the closer role immediately remains to be seen, but Simon's tenure might not have much more life despite his capable performance in the role.
Job security score: 2
Health score: 4

Mound meetings

  • The Chicago White Sox will be without closer Bobby Jenks for at least a couple of more days. He was placed on the bereavement list yesterday and will be out three to seven days.
Matt Thornton will likely earn the save chances in Jenks' absence. J.J. Putz, who locked down a save chance Saturday, might also be called upon. The former is the better bet.
  • Jonathan Papelbon returned to his usual self with a perfect save Saturday. The Boston Red Sox's closer received last Friday off, partly to work on some minor adjustments. Per pitching coach John Farrell, Paps has been a bit more east-to-west in his delivery rather than direct with his arm action. It was one reason the splitter Colorado Rockies slugger Jason Giambi hit for a homer last week flattened out.
Don't let Paps' two midweek meltdowns last week hide the fact he has been one of the top closers this year. His K/9 is down, but he still has solid ratios and is among the league leaders in saves.
  • The Cleveland Indians' Kerry Wood quieted some of his critics yesterday with a scoreless, three-K save. The Tribe's closer was making his first appearance since blowing his third save last Wednesday. He'll probably need a few more appearances like Sunday's if Cleveland is to have any chance of moving his $10.5 million salary.
  • Brandon League saved the Seattle Mariners' victory Saturday. He struck out one in one inning of work. Closer David Aardsma was away from the team to be with his wife, who went into labor. He's expected to be available Tuesday.
  • Andrew Bailey wasn't as secure in the ninth yesterday as he usually is. He gave up two hits and one walk but escaped with his 14th save. The final out was a single that hit Pittsburgh Pirates third baseman Pedro Alvarez as he was running to second.

Mound meetings

  • Atlanta Braves RP Billy Wagner
    Wags dinged
The Atlanta Braves weren't able to call on Billy Wagner in the ninth Saturday because the lefty was nursing a sore left ankle. It has been bothering him since last week, though he was able to pitch with it until he aggravated it Saturday warming up. He received a cortisone shot after Saturday's game and doesn't expect to miss much time.
Peter Moylan was the one used in the ninth to secure the Bravos' win after Takashi Saito, who started the ninth, gave up two runs. He could be your best bet in the short term for any saves, though Saito probably would be the choice once he is back on form following a DL stint. He only returned last Wednesday.
  • Aaron Heilman walked only one batter in recording his second save for the Arizona Diamondbacks yesterday. He was a bit lucky, too, as a long fly ball died before it could leave the yard; if it left, it would have tied the game. On the surface, the save might tighten Heilman's grip on the job, but his skills don't suggest long-term viability.
Chad Qualls, or possibly Sam Demel, who gave up his first two hits in a D-backs uniform yesterday, are deep mixed and NL-only options for those speculating.
  • The New York Mets' Francisco Rodriguez remained in for his 17th save Friday despite having his back lock up on him. He said he has been dealing with it for awhile, but extra stretching and some treatment, including an anti-inflammatory shot, have helped him avoid taking any time off.
  • Trevor Hoffman had another two scoreless appearances for the Milwaukee Brewers over the weekend. He hasn't allowed any runs since surrendering three June 1 and hasn't given up a walk or hit in his last four outings. Speculating on him in deep mixed wouldn't be out of order; Milwaukee has mentioned the Hoff could be back closing eventually.
John Axford has yet to show many signs of shakiness as Milwaukee's closer, though. He struck out three while giving up one hit in a Sunday save.
  • It wasn't a blown save, but the Los Angeles Dodgers' Jonathan Broxton gave up four runs on four hits and two walks in the ninth yesterday in the Blue's 8-6, extra-innings loss to the New York Yankees. Broxton needed 48 pitches to get through the inning, which included a borderline call on what would have been a third strike to Colin Curtis for the second out.
You have to wonder if J-Brox will be used today. He also worked 1 1/3 innings Saturday in non-save work. Ramon Troncoso could be in line for a save if Broxton isn't available, unless matchups dictate the left-handed George Sherrill is needed.
  • The San Diego Padres' Luke Gregerson saved his first game of the year yesterday. Heath Bell worked the previous two days (34 pitches) and four of the last five.

Travis Yost - Around the NHL

HockeyBuzz.com - Travis Yost - Around the NHL: Edmonton Journal Ridiculousness, Buyouts, Flyers+Goalies

The NHL didn't have any huge stories develop on Monday after the draft weekend, but there's quite a few notables worth mentioning.

Personally, I don't think there's any better way to start an article than this screen cap courtesy of Puck Central. The Edmonton Journal managed to make the elusive double typo in the headline, and I'm sure someone in the office is shaking their head in disgust/laughter right now.

For the record, that probably was supposed to say "Wooing Bonner," in reference to Scott Bonner of Vancouver.

--

A lot of players hitting the waiver wire today, including Jonathan Cheechoo of the Ottawa Senators, Ales Kotalik of the Calgary Flames, and Petteri Nokelainen of the Phoenix Coyotes, all en route to a probable buyout.

Kotalik and Cheechoo are the two biggest stories here, as both are making a nice chunk of change for doing next to nothing. Kotalik will be making $6,000,000 over the next two seasons, and Cheechoo $3,000,000 on the last year of his contract.

Buying both of the players out will still result in a slight cap hit, but will give the Flames and Senators slightly more flexibility moving forward.

--

The Philadelphia Flyers are in pursuit of both Evgeni Nabokov and Marty Turco, and have made a contract offer to the latter. Turco turned down a three year, $6,000,000 deal, and stated he did so because he wants to explore all of free agency before making a decision.

According to CSN Philly and PC, Nabokov could be looking for $5M-6M per, which is a tremendously large number for a goalie who hasn't had a ton of post-season success. The Flyers will try and work around that number, but one has to wonder if the Flyers will pull the trigger on such a large contract if forced against the wall.

In case one is wondering, neither situation is considered tampering. The Flyers have been given permission by both San Jose and Dallas to make an offer to Nabokov and Turco, respectively.

Dallas is letting Philadelphia negotiate early in the hopes that a deal can be quietly reached. Dallas can then trade Turco to the Flyers for a conditional pick, and it's a win/win for both parties. The Flyers are really walking the tight rope with this, though, and I'm surprised we haven't heard more.

The latest from ESPN.com, the Edmonton Journal and the Ottawa Sun.

ESPN.COM: Pierre LeBrun and Scott Burnside reports sources claim the LA Kings will make a pitch for forward Ilya Kovalchuk when the UFA market starts on July 1st. They attempted unsuccessfully to acquire his rights from the New Jersey Devils. The Kings might also take a run at signing Dan Hamhuis if the Penguins fail to re-sign him. They like Toronto's Tomas Kaberle but the Maple Leafs want a top-six forward in return...Kaberle and Sergei Gonchar could be attractive options for the Devils if they lose Paul Martin to free agency...The Leafs could find more interest in Kaberle once the best free agent defensemen are signed...The Phoenix Coyotes are running out of time to re-sign defensemen Zbynyk Michalek and Derek Morris plus forwards Matthew Lombardi and Lee Stempniak. GM Dan Maloney said he was more optimistic a month ago about retaining them...The Buffalo Sabres are also running out of time in their attempts to retain Toni Lydman and Henrik Tallinder.
SPECTOR'S NOTE: Kovalchuk's been long linked to the Kings and it wouldn't be shocking if he signs with them on Thursday. If that happens however I don't expect they'll still go after an expensive UFA blueliner...I expect Kaberle to be dealt but probably not until the first full week in July at the earliest...Still enough time left for the Coyotes and Sabres to re-sign those players but most if not all will probably hit the open market, where given the lack of quality depth they could possibly attract more attention and thus bigger contracts than they might've had in previous UFA markets.
EDMONTON JOURNAL: Jim Matheson reports Kings GM Dean Lombardi is lukewarm about pursuing Ilya Kovalchuk but team president Tim Lieweke believes he'd be good for marketing...The Blues are working on a new contract for Jaroslav Halak, probably in the $4 million range...With the Oilers acquisition of Colin Fraser last week Ryan Potulny's days with the club could be numbered. He's yet to receive a qualifying offer from the club...Agent Don Baizley said client Teemu Selanne is working out as though he intends to return next season but hasn't heard from him yet about his plans...Marty Turco would likely go to the San Jose Sharks for a one-year, $3 million contract...The Washington Capitals can't afford Anton Volchenkov but they might have interest in Vancouver's Willie Mitchell if he's healthy.
OTTAWA SUN: Bruce Garrioch reports the Sharks have had discussions with the Bruins regarding Tim Thomas but are likely to pursue Marty Turco once he becomes a UFA...Don't be surprised if Ray Whitney lands in Tampa Bay as he'd be a good veteran presence on the Lightning, possibly on a two-year deal worth $3.5 million per...Minnesota Wild tried unsuccessfully to land Patrice Bergeron or David Krejci from Boston, while the Panthers aren't willing to part with Stephen Weiss...The Blackhawks aren't done dealing and are believed shopping winger Kris Versteeg...The Lightning might also be in the mix for Evgeni Nabokov's negotiating rights...the Ducks aren't sure what to do about Bobby Ryan...
SPECTOR'S NOTE: The Sharks are familiar with Turco having played against him quite a lot in the Western Conference so it wouldn't surprise me if he signed with them... The Lightning need a starting goalie and more defensive depth, not another scoring forward, so I'll be surprised if Whitney lands there. They've already got enough "veteran presence" with St. Louis, Lecavalier, Malone and Ohlund...Bergeron, Krejci and Weiss aren't available...While Chicago GM Stan Bowman claims that currently there's no need to make another salary dumping trade that'll probably change once he starts re-signing players like Niemi and Hjalmarsson...If the Bolts took a pass on Thomas because he's too expensive for their tastes I daresay they'll do the same with Nabokov. I still have a feeling either Mason or Ellis joins the Lightning this summer...Ducks management are apparently confident they'll get Ryan re-signed.

Playing Tim Tebow would be a disservice to his veteran teammates

"I played football in elementary school with the guys, so I've got the basics of the game down. I decided I like Broncos rookie Tim Tebow. I heard he is a great Christian and was a great quarterback at Florida. So I have a bone to pick after you wrote: 'This shiny, happy, new No. 15 for the Broncos has real potential to instigate far more discord in the locker room than Brandon Marshall ever did with his stupid human tricks.' How in the world do you think that? If you want to make derogatory comments about my man Tebow, you should get some facts."

Marc Savard in Ottawa?

With news that Marc Savard waived his no trade clause for two teams in the National Hockey League, rampant speculation broke loose. Though Savard is on the wrong side of 30, he's still got loads of talent, as shownby his 78 point and 88 point campaigns in 2008 and 2009, respectively.

When news broke, it wasn't a complete shocker that Ottawa was one of them.

Marc Savard has waived his no-movement clause and given the Boston Bruins consent to trade him to either the Toronto Maple Leafs or Ottawa Senators, sources tell Sportsnet.

Between that and the bad blood with Will, it looks like the 2011 tour is in big trouble and she’s saying she’s going to split for good.

Khia's Cooch

"Don’t be scared to bring candies and toys into the bedroom. Some guys are jealous of dildos because of the size, so what I did to kind of ease [my ex-husband] is introduce him to jumbo candy canes that they give at Christmas time. I like that better because number one, it doesn’t look like a penis that’s bigger than him, so he won’t be jealous. Plus, it makes the vagina taste wonderful and the peppermint makes it tingle a little bit when he blows. It’s good when he’s giving you head; it looks fun and kiddie-like going in, so he’s not intimidated."

EK - Draft Rumors

According to sources....

* The Volchenkov sweeps have officially passed the Penguins threshold. (Don't completely rule Ottawa out. I know what has been said...) Also the Canadiens could move a "significant player" to make room.

*The Penguins are once again talking to Gonchar...however, they are also in on Kaberle and may be leaking Gonchar stuff so that the Leafs know they can do without. There is a ton of that kind of stuff happening tonight. The Pens are also looking into some mid-range d-men... defensive shot blockers..

* The Blue Jackets, Canadiens, Wild and Flames are in on the Stephen Weiss sweeps. (adding him to the Chart Update in the early morning) He has been a hot commodity today.

* Brent Burns is the top name the Montreal Canadiens are after. It's funny, 48 hours ago I thought there was no way in the world Burns would be moved. Now I am hearing his name connected to Montreal and Florida.

* Tomorrow looks like the day the Flyers will get their goalie. Either by trade for rights or straight out trade. All roads look to be pointing towards Tim Thomas or Chris Mason.

* The Bruins remain a HIGHLY rumored team tonight. They are after Columbus 4th overall..Savard and Wheeler are possible.

* The Oilers and Leafs have had several talks..but there is no way the Oilers move their number 1 I am told.

* The Hurricanes and Predators are talking a deal that could potentially "reshape each team for the next few years."

* The Devils are entertaining offers for Kovalchuk's rights.. The issue is the Kings seem the be the only team in the running for the most part, and the Kings know this so why trade for his rights if you know he wants to go there.

* Kaberle talks have intensified, but Brian Burke is sticking to his guns her on getting back "something that can help the Leafs win in 2010-2011. It is starting to pay off big time.

* Many teams are willing to take Jeff Carter off the Flyers hands. (possibly including the Leafs) The Flyers, I am told, are asking for a legit #1 goalie in return. It could happen tomorrow as the draft gets underway.

* There are Lecavalier talks again. They aren't nearly where they were last year and I don't have specifics except to say what a source told me this afternoon, "The Rangers know what it takes and are strongly considering it."

* If Quick or Bernier are to stick around tomorrow varies greatly depending on who you talk to. The Kings are saying no one is moving, but murmurs from other teams paint a vastly differing picture.

*Spezza is another one. There is a deal the Oilers can make. They are waiting to see. I wouldn't expect Spezza to heat up too much at the draft...but by Wednesday it will start to feel like it did last year going into July 1 with Heatley.

* I would watch the Islanders VERY closely tomorrow and Saturday. Word is they are looking for a sniper and may open the checkbook. Frolov is possible. Also Brad Richards.

* Though is continues to fly under the radar, "Alexander Semin" is said to be on Vancouver's radar. The Flames have also kicked tires. I wouldnt say the Caps are shopping Semin...but I never write players are being shopped.

* According to Pierre Lebrun, Turco could be the next starter for the Sharks. I love Turco as a person and think he would be an excellent backup for the Sabres or Capitals...but to put a guy whose rep has been not accomplishing in the playoffs as the goalie for the San Jose Sharks takes some serious....

See ya all in a few short hours...(or if my phone text messages go off) I will be here all night.

Sleep well!

F*ckin Blazers

If they're not up 15 against the Lakers, flirting with a championship, they're blowing marijuana smoke out the window of a yellow Hummer. If they're not making the playoffs after five years in the lottery, they're firing 100 hardworking front-office employees. If it's not the players, it's management. If it's not management, it's ownership.

The Blazers bounce from era to era, teasing us with glimpses of peace and harmony squeezed between bouts of distraction, dysfunction and embarrassment. You want so badly to tie the franchise to your hopes using your heart strings, but in the end, the Blazers feel as heavy as a bag of bricks.

Draft day is the one day that every franchise in the league is supposed to win. Everyone begins the day hoping they get to say, "We got better today." But I'm not sure any of us can watch Pritchard go out the door and think Portland is better off without the guy

SPECTOR'S Hockey Rumos of the Day

Updates on Jason Spezza, Tim Thomas, and the Flyers goaltending situation.

OTTAWA SUN/OTTAWA CITIZEN: report Senators GM Bryan Murray said he's not actively shopping center Jason Spezza and there's been little interest in him around the league. The Sun reported a rumor the Edmonton Oilers were interested but haven't got much to offer up in return.
SPECTOR'S NOTE: While it's still possible Spezza could be dealt before July 1st recent reports suggest that's growing increasingly unlikely.

PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS: Frank Seravalli reports there's been no progress in contract talks between Flyers management and recently-acquired defenseman Dan Hamhuis. Talks however have not come to a halt and are expected to continue during and following the draft. Seravalli also reports on potential goaltending trade targets for the Flyers, including Boston's Tim Thomas or LA's Jonathan Bernier.
CSNPHILLY.COM: Tim Panaccio reports sources say the Flyers have contacted the Boston Bruins regarding goalie Tim Thomas. While they consider him too expensive sources say they might be willing to move two players if they decide to go the Thomas route and if its the right players to move. Still, it appears they might end up re-signing Michael Leighton.
COURIERPOST ONLINE: Chuck Gormley reports Flyers forward Jeff Carter's name continues to float around in trade rumor but he hopes to remain with the club. Gormley reports it's not the first time Carter has been mentioned in trade rumors in recent years but he wonders if the Flyers can afford him and his $5 million salary for next season given the free agents they hope to re-sign plus their goaltending situation. Gormley suggests the LA Kings' Jonathan Bernier as a possible trade target, suggesting they might also land winger Wayne Simmonds if they included Carter in the deal or perhaps getting creative by shipping Carter to the Maple Leafs for Tomas Kaberle and a first round pick then send Braydon Coburn to the Coyotes for forward Shane Doan.
SPECTOR'S NOTE: Gormley forgets the Leafs don't have a first round pick and the Coyotes aren't moving team captain Shane Doan. He does however make a good point that Carter's salary could hinder the Flyers in their free agent and goaltending plans. Given their need to re-sign Hamhuis and Coburn I think the Flyers will seriously consider re-signing Leighton.

BOSTON HERALD: Stephan Harris reports the Bruins are trying to engineer blockbuster trades involving goalie Tim Thomas and center Marc Savard. Three teams are believed interested in Thomas but he could prove difficult to move now given the depth in available free agent goalies, while a Savard trade would be far more shocking although it's believed based on the need to make room for prospect center Tyler Seguin whom the Bruins are expected to select with the second overall pick.

BOSTON GLOBE: Kevin Paul Dupont reports Thomas' agent isn't actively searching for a trade for his client, and hasn't been approached by any team with an offer for him. Dupont believes it's more likely Savard could be shipped out than Thomas.
SPECTOR'S NOTE: The glut of free agent goalies will seriously limit the potential market for Thomas. As for Savard, there likely is a market for him but given his movement clause and salary he won't be easy to move.

Did Kate Gosselin Get Shitty Botox?

Did Kate Gosselin Get Back Alley Botox?

UsWeekly has their quotes:

In the "after" photo, she "has the typical appearance of Dysport or Botox poorly placed in the space between the brows where frown lines occur," adds Olding. But because Gosselin didn't have any injectables put in her forehead, "the lateral part of her brow is elevated in an abnormally high position, which my patients refer to as McDonald's arches!"

Explains NYC-based Dr. Steven Pearlman, "The center of her eyebrows are dropped and spread, which can happen from Botox treatment of the forehead frown lines."

Pearlman believes Gosselin may have been injected in the shape of a "V" on her forehead, meaning the muscles near her temple weren't affected "so they over act, giving this Jack Nicholson type of look! Her upper eyelids look a little hollow, which can be as a result of the brows being pulled upward."

Gosselin's surgeon is slammed by ScientificSkin.com owner Dr. Kenneth Beer: "This is a bad injection technique with poor placement. The injections were done in a cookbook pattern with no consideration for her particular anatomy. Her outer brow is too peaked, which gives her a devilish appearance."

Luckily for Gosselin, the botched Botox "can be corrected by a few injections above her eyebrows to let them drop a bit," says Dr. Tony Youn. "Or by just waiting a few months for the Botox effects to subside."

LANDON DONOVAN SCORES BIGGEST GOAL IN U.S. WORLD CUP HISTORY

The U.S. is moving on to the next round of the World Cup after a 1-0 victory over Algeria. Landon Donovan’s game winning goal against Algeria came with just seconds left in penalty time.

The USA were able to overcome a series of blown calls by referees against both Slovakia and Algeria to advance.

Amy Winehouse is “making a huge effort to be sober”

According to the Mail’s sources,
She may be healthier these days but Amy Winehouse showed she hasn’t lost her fiery, rebellious streak when she stormed out of an east London party last night. The 26-year-old singer turned up at the Reebok Lounge in Shoreditch with her cosmetically-enhanced chest shoehorned into a tiny black vest to collect four free pairs of trainers. But she left after barely two minutes when a fellow guest got her back up.
Winehouse was riled by the guest, at ViceStyle.com’s party, who asked her about her relationship with new boyfriend, film director Reg Traviss. An onlooker is said to have claimed: ‘She had been escorted inside the party and was happily choosing her freebies when a girl came up to her and started asking her about her relationship. Amy didn’t take kindly to this at all, gave her a filthy look and said, ‘I don’t have to put up with this’ before storming out. She had been there barely a few minutes but made sure she took four new pairs of trainers with her. The organisers were left somewhat in the lurch.’
Winehouse’s apparent good health has been attributed to Traviss, who was introduced to the singer by a mutual friend and lives near her Marylebone home. He has been described as sensible and mature, a far cry from her former husband Blake Fielder-Civil, who was jailed for assault two years ago.
In fact, Reg is said to have had such a positive influence on Amy that she is already talking about moving in with him.
An insider is reported to have said: ‘Amy and Reg are totally loved up. She doesn’t want to live [in her new mansion] on her own and would like Reg to share it with her. When she’s not on the bottle they get on brilliantly. But Reg has told her to quit the drinking, otherwise he’ll be off. She wants to keep him so has decided to make a huge effort to stay sober.’

Eklund - It's Rights Rumors Day! KovalchukLA,Cgy. VolchenkovPitt, Mtl, and more

"On Kovalchuk...

* There are rumors Kovalchuk's rights may have actually been acquired or are very close to being acquired by the LA Kings. There are also rumors the Flames have tried to get Ilya's rights as well. The Kings are, and have been the odds on favorite (off and on) to sign Kovalchuk to a new contract since the deadline.

On Marleau..

* Rumors the NJ Devils and Ottawa Senators are looking into Marleau's rights. NJ has liked Marleau since the deadline last year as well.

On Volchenkov...

* Rumours Montreal is trying to land Anton Volchenkov's rights, but of course the Sens would be reluctant to move those rights within the Division.

The Penguins are after Volchenkov's rights as well, and there is a rumour out there that says the Sens and Pens may actually trade the rights of their top UFAs to each other. The Sens would get the rights to Gonchar and the Pens would get the rights to Volchenkov.

On Gonchar...

There seems to be a lot of legs to the rumor Gonchar's rights could be headed to San Jose..but I do believe Ottawa is in on this still...and for that reason alone we haven't yet seen a done deal in San Jose announced.

And in Trade Rumors..

On Spezza...

Jason is under contract, so his rights are not up for sale today...However, a source IM'd me a few minutes ago the following. "there may have just been a breakthrough that tips the scale more towards Spezz being dealt to San Jose or Edmonton."

My source wouldn't elaborate on who had the upper hand currently.

More when I land or if news breaks here in the clouds via an IM or Email to me.

Cheers!

Ek "

The knock on Wall: He can't shoot

"The annual talent grab that is the NBA draft occasionally leads to more questions -- for instance, How long will it take for a player to shine? -- than answers. In the meantime, it all starts with the Washington Wizards' selection of Kentucky point guard John Wall. And while I don't mean to suggest that the Wizards should take his teammate DeMarcus Cousins or Ohio State's Evan Turner, I do think there are some knocks on Wall's game -- explosive as he may be -- that seldom get discussed. Like, well, he sort of can't shoot. Hey, but Rajon Rondo couldn't shoot coming out of Kentucky and still can't at times, and he's done OK for himself and the Celtics."
